Web Design For Idiots

Easy way to change ANY website image

There is a SUPER simple way to change any image that you see on your website and make it into something complete custom, and guess what, IT DOESN’T REQUIRE ANY CODING!!!!

Its a simple 9 step process.

1. Go to your website and find the page with the image that you want to change
2. Right click (or if using a mac ctrl click) and click SAVE IMAGE to your desktop.
3. Right click (or if using a mac ctrl click) on the image and choose PROPERTIES – this will open a new pop up window. There you will see all the information you need to know about this image
4. Look at the IMAGE LOCATION and copy and paste it or write it down somewhere so you remember
5. Open the image in your favorite graphic program and build a new button (on a new layer if you can) over the old one and delete the layer with the old image.
6. Click SAVE (you HAVE to keep the exact same file name and type. All osc buttons are .gif)
7. Open your FTP program and upload the button the to folder that you copied and pasted or wrote down from the IMAGE LOCATION properties window.
8. Visit your website and now go to the page that the image was on, hold down SHIFT and click refresh and your new button will be there!!
9. Repeat steps 7-8 for every image on your website.

Thats it. Its totally easy and completely fool proof. By building the button OVER the old one and deleting the old you, you are making sure that your button is as close to the same size as possible.

So go crazy replacing buttons, and other images. You can literally do this with ANY type of website out there. All images reside in a folder somewhere on your server, and the code is calling for that particular image with that particular name in that particular spot. So when you just change the image and nothing else, you are STILL calling for that particular image, but you made the image LOOK different.

IS IT STARTING TO MAKE SENSE NOW??

So if you have wordpress and desperately want to change your header but theres no easy way to do it, USE THIS PROCESS.. If you have oscommerce and HATE those blue buttons, USE THIS PROCESS.. It works for ANYTHING

This is some text prior to the author information. You can change this text from the admin section of WP-Gravatar  Someone who is relatively new to web design. I am new enough to still remember how absolutely frustrating it was to try and get anything done in this field, but have also been around long enough to be able to help those that are where I was a year ago. Aside from web design, I run the office of my dad's engineering business, and do book keeping by trade. I love my pets.. All 6 cats, 1 peg legged dogs, and 1 hedgehog. LOVE THEM!! Oh yea, and my husband. He lets me chase my dreams and I let him do the same. We are happy people because of it. Read more from this author

Also handy for people who don’t want to fork out money to fix up their CSS for a customizable header in WP. I hadn’t thought of this before. Thankyou.

Web design is the first thing your visitors will see. It will determine your credibility and whether or not your visitors will stay or leave. That is what most of us take into consideration so heavily. However, many of us forgot about the loading time of the page which takes about 7-9 seconds. Longer loading time will make visitors leave your site even without reading your content :D

That is a good point Morison, design is important but if your site takes forever to load, you can VERY easily loose 1/3 of your visitors.

WHen you are creating images to replace for your website, you should make sure that you save the images as .gif (if they do not need to be photographic quality) or as a medium quality jpg.

Also, NEVER try and cram a big image to a small space.it ends up looking funny AND adds load time.

    Hi,

Thanks for the 9 step instructions. I am a web designer myself, but not a coder, so I guess I am an idiot myself.

Wordpress is something I am pursuing now and with this advise i can make changes quicker now. I was totally lost.

    Thank you

    Carrie

Well, what is useless to one will not be useless to others. This is a site for newbies.
