No One Comments if I help them!
I am a tad bit confused. Every day I come onto my blog and check the stats. One of the main things I look for the the key words people used to find me. See, if theres a keyword people use often, but I don’t have any REALĀ inforamtion on that topic, instead I just mention it in passing, I will go further into detail.
So far, there has been VERY few, it no off topic searches. Every who searched for “connecting to filezilla” and “choosing a good host” and finally, “getting iweb website to the internet” has HOPEFULLY found exactly what I needed. I mean, all of my tutorials explain exactly those things. YET, no one really comments.
I’m assuming that its because my posts are tutorials and the best comment you can get is a “thanks” but a thanks would be really nice!
So I would just like to say that today, if I come across a tutorial on a blog, I will be posting SOME kind of comment to let the owner know I was there, I was happy, and I will come back for my info. I would hope that you readers will do the same.
Thank you!

I’ve not needed your help, but came across your blog through The Dare to be Different page, So I thought I’d leave a comment
Well THANK YOU I appreciate the comment!
you took my words out of my mouth
i think the ratio is 1:120 commenters to readers.
should be more of 60:120 …
It’s because you don’t have nothing worth saying ! Your so-called “tutorials” bore people to no end. You just say things already said a million times.
Only better !
I think that sometimes it can be harder to comment on a really good post. Maybe that’s the only reason…
I know, that’s not much of a comment, but I couldn’t drop and run after reading this post
One of the things I’ve seen recommended is to ASK for comments on every post.
I haven’t read one of your tutorials yet — going there soon, but I suspect that you only teach in them and don’t follow up with any leading questions, such as “Are there other aspects of this topic that you need explained?” “What was your experience after following my tutorial?” or “Do you know of another way to accomplish this task? Please share with us how you did it!”
Margaret
hey it does not seem that bad look at all the comments you have here
thank you.
I struggle with the same thing except I don’t have very many tutorials on my site just posts for the most part. I think the ratio that ady levy spoke about in one of your other comments is right. You just don’t get that many to comment even if it is just a thank you. For me I just decided i flat out need more traffic to get more comments.
Hi there. I have to say that at first I was not sure if your comment was spam or not, but I went to your website and you have a pretty nice blog. Its a nice and organized design with lots of info!! thanks for posting and enjoy my blog!
You may also have to remember that your target audience (someone for who creating or doing anything with a website is new to them), may be wary of putting their details on another website.
Perhaps you can write an article about what happens to this info / why they shouldn’t be scared of commenting etc in a new blog post, then add it as a link to your comments.php template so it appears on each commentable page. e.g.:
“Leave a Reply (Why would I want to do that?)”
etc.
Hey.. I am leaving a comment, just because, even though I am new to blogging, I can see that comments at least let people see that somebody read their words. And.. FYI, I love the idiot series. I’m not sure yet whether I will do anything but browse your site…but I am leaving a comment.
I make it a practice to always leave a comment of every blog i visit…1)I love comments 2) I know how getting comments makes me feel
I have so enjoyed reading your blog-you have some GREAT tips and advice
meh.
I’ve experienced the same thing. I think people just want to get what they want and get on with their day.
Only bloggers leave comments, or those playing the blogs for links.
Real people, real visitors rarely comment at all. My experience with all that at least…
I like it!
Web design for Idiots eh? It’s a bit like the Web Design for Dummies type thing.
I’ve come up with a great ideas for my website
It’s going to be called:
“Web design guidelines for stupid F*C***G thick as s*** morons!”
I think this ’sub-normal’ limited inteligence range might be really popular, it’s far more to the point than the dummies range – lol
I followed a link to your blog. I’ve looked around. You have problems with grammar (spelling and capitalization of titles) and your tone is condescending rather than upbeat and helpful. Your errors reduce the authority of your voice and your tone reduces your visitor’s receptivity.
I have some suggestions. Compose in Word and pay attention to the spelling and grammar underlines. Copy and paste from there to your blog. When you write, make positive statements. For example, instead of “don’t forget to” say “remember to.” As old as it is, “Strunk and White” still has relevant advice for writing well.
Consider setting up a page specifically for thank you comments.
An example would be mine at http://garyjones.co.uk/helped/ – include a link to your version of the page in forum signatures, emails, IM status messages, or perhaps even respond to those who say “Wow, thanks, that really helped” with a “If you feel I’ve helped you, please leave a comment:” followed by a link.
Not everyone will comment, even if you ask them too, but having a record of some of the people who you’ve helped (and how you helped them) is a nice reminder, and may turn into a “Look how helpful I am!” resource for the future.
Hi Lindsay, well you helped me in an email so now I will tell anyone with the problem of changing dwt templates to html, but in the map view it stays dwt and turns red! You can’t just delete it.
I went to HELP-Using Dreamweaver Mx-Index-Templates.
Creating and Modifying links in sitemap. To change the link, select the page SITE-SITEMAP VIEWS-CHANGE LINK from Context menu.

Hi Lindsay,
Thanks for the info about Filezilla. I found it on Google, middle of page 3. I was looking for “filezilla tutorial”
I built my website in 1998 using notepad and uploaded it using IE. The site was a free site with too many ads. so after a year I went looking for another host. That is where my site is still at.
I will let you know how the FTP goes.
Thank you again.

I really like the layout and design of your blog, plus the sense of humor makes it a good read. Also thanks for the CFM too, that made my day.
Wow what can I say… I have spent ages here because of one post you made (the only one I think
) on the osCommerce forum and I have learnt more here in 2 hours about osCom than I have on their site in 2 years. Now I have 4 books to buy (I didn’t even know there were any) and a lot of work to do to get my website and store looking as good as yours…
Thank you
PS anyone that recommends HostMonster and Fetch has got to know what they are talking about
Not sure where I got the idea that you had only made the one post at osCom guess I was 3617 posts short – sorry
TONS OF COMMENTS HERE!!!
But I think those that read and find good info are so excited to implement it that they scoot off to do it before leaving a comment.
(I’ve ‘talked’ to you before on the oscommerce forum) HI!!!
I have had the same experience. I run a dj tutorials blog too and even though I am pretty sure the tutorials are useful and helpful, I only get a couple comments for every few hundred visitors. It’s just the way it goes for some of us.
You’re not alone.
I’ve had 8,000 visits and not one person had stopped to say thank you for all my technical Uberness – lol
Ce la vie
You shouldn’t beg for comments. That’s sad. A little “high falutin” and definitely annoying, don’t you think?
Wow.. maybe you should look up the word HIGHFALUTIN mr. chris.. Making a post asking WHY people who visit my site and find the answers to their questions dont comment is actually the OPPOSITE from highfalutin.
you are a sad little guy.. LOL and you even gave yourself a one thumbs up! You really do love self affirmation. Hey, whatever works for you!
Well if yah don’t beg for comments you ain’t gonna get them – you have to beg people for comments on eBay (they call it feedback) we beg people for comments in our stores (referrals and reviews) and I bet ol’ Chris has got a please sign my guest-book on his site – yep that’s begging too
I am in school at American Intercontinental University online. Through their resources I found http://www.allgraphicdesign.com and I saw the tutorials. Blah blah blah, here I am.
And thank you very much for the information. Like I said, I’m in school and I’m double majoring in web and multimedia design. So I appreciate all the information I can get.
Begging for comment is rather sad and it’s something I personally wouldn’t do.
But anyway…I wish I had the same number of comments you have here on my websites!
I dont know why people see this as begging for comments. Its a post mentioning the fact that my search engine terms match perfectly with my content, and clearly the tutorials are helping people.. so why don’t they comment.
Not to mention just about every “blogger’s manual” says that if you don’t ask for comments, you won’t get them. So yea, if the fact that my blog is widely read and commented on is sad, then that is ok with me
Hello! Just found this site tonight and have had a quick look at your blogs too (just quick as my rule is to be off the computer at midnight and I only have 20 minutes left!). So I’ll be back for a more thorough look, have bookmarked etc.. but in the meantime, thank you! I really enjoy the style and humour of your blogs, and they’re informative to boot! Nice work!
